Surprisingly: Samsung unveils UFS 4.0 storage capacity... Twice the performance with less power consumption!

Samsung suddenly announced, without any previous hints, about the new generation of UFS 4.0 storage, and for those who do not know, UFS or as it is known as “Universal Flash Storage” is a type of storage capacity used in flash and medium phones, which has managed with time to evolve and become less A price that allowed it to replace the eMMC capacities in budget phones with a low price. In 2020, we saw the unveiling of UFS 3.1, which managed to unrivaled as the fastest storage ever in any Android phone, even today.

Now, Samsung has announced the new generation, which will in turn be on the throne of speeds, as UFS 4.0 comes with huge improvements in terms of performance and power consumption when compared to the previous capacity, as the new capacity offers a speed of up to 23.2 gigabits per second per path, which is twice the speed that Offered by the capacity of UFS 3.1, which is up to 11.6 gigabytes only.

Samsung says that this new speed will be ideal for phones that support 5G networks, which will need to process huge amounts of data, of course, and the Korean company expects to take advantage of the new storage capacity in the areas of virtual and augmented reality AR/VR.

The company also announced that UFS 4.0 storage is built on the 7th generation V-NAND architecture - Samsung's name for its 3D NAND technology - which will enable a sequential read speed of up to 4200 MB/s and a sequential write speed of up to 2800 MB/s. a second. And those speeds are much higher than the previous generation as well.

NAND Technology: A type of non-volatile storage technology that does not require power to hold data.

UFS 4.0 storage also offers lower power consumption, which is always the phrase we like to hear when new technology is revealed, we may not need faster speeds; But we definitely need to consume less power as this will increase the hours we use our smartphones and improve the battery performance in general. This is what Samsung promises in its new capacity, as UFS 4.0 provides a sequential read speed of 6.0MB/s per mA, which is a 46% improvement over the previous generation, according to the company's statements!

Finally, Samsung announced that the new storage capacity will come in dimensions that do not exceed 11 x 13 x 1 millimeters, which I mentioned will be more space-saving, which will facilitate the process of designing devices in general, and the available storage capacities will vary, with a maximum of 1 terabyte, Which is the same maximum capacity as the previous version, which we saw in phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Samsung will officially start the production and manufacture of UFS 4.0 capacities in the third quarter of 2022, with smart phones to start adopting them at the beginning of next year 2023. This means that the upcoming Samsung family, the Galaxy S23, will often use the new capacity, in addition to phones such as the Galaxy Flip 4 and Fold 4.

The capacity of UFS 3.1 can be considered sufficient to meet our current requirements, it offers excellent speed for daily use and we don't think we will need anything higher, but development is always welcome, and we also find better energy consumption a must, especially if it will make a clear difference in battery consumption.
